چکیده

At present several groups are analyzing astrophysical data in a search for time-variation of the fine structure constant α. Here we discuss how to exclude systematic effects caused by the changes in the isotope abundances during the evolution of the universe. We suggest using particular combinations of the transition frequencies of O II, Al II, Al III, Si II and Mn II as anchors, which are insensitive to α-variation and to changes in isotope abundances. These anchors can be used to determine the cosmological redshift. Then, one can use other combinations of frequencies as probes for the timevariation of α and another set as probes for the isotopic abundances. In this way it is possible to eliminate one source of the systematic errors in the search for α-variation and get new information about evolution of the isotopes. On the level of accuracy that has already been reached in the search for α-variation it is possible to see ∼10% changes in isotope abundances of Si and Ni.

We review the observational information on the constancy of the fine structure constant α. We find that small improvements on the measurement of 187 Re lifetime can provide significant progress in exploring the range of variability suggested by QSO data. We also discuss the effects of a time varying α on stellar structure and evolution. We find that radioactive dating of ancient stars can offer...

We derive the stellar and circumstellar parameters with two models: the classical constant density nebula model and a stellar wind model. Depending on the mass loss rate of the star the stellar wind model results in a range of valid values which can deviate from the classical model results. This is especially true for the elemental abundances which are for every valid stellar wind model larger ...

The gravitational field produced by a domain wall acts as a medium with spacetime-dependent permittivity ε. Therefore, the fine structure constant α = e 2 /4πε will be a time-dependent function at fixed position. The most stringent constraint on the time-variation of α comes from the natural reactor Oklo and gives | ˙ α/α| < f ew × 10 −17 yr −1. This limit constrains the tension of a cosmic dom...

Quantum-gravity effects may introduce relevant consequences for the propagation and interaction of high energy cosmic rays particles. Assuming the space-time foamy structure results in an intrinsic uncertainty of energy and momentum of particles, we show how low energy (under GZK) observations can provide strong constraints on the role of the fluctuating space-time structure.
